Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest

Nassaar, Christopher. "Wilde's The importance of Being Earnest." The Explicator 60.2 (2002): 78+. Gale Student Resources In Context. Web. 18 Feb. 2011.

Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest talks about the main theme Wilde writes about which is, child abuse. He has presented this theme in many of his works like The Picture of Dorian Gray. The child in this book has antisocial behavior problems which are said to have come from child abuse when he was smaller. This character in the book became wealthy with the help of his parents murderer but even having it all he was treated cruelly. In another of Wilde’s fairy tales, “The Happy prince,” the main character is also abused. It is common for Wilde to include some kind of murder from the main characters family members. These characters in the book try to take revenge or cause damage to the person who hurt their family. The play The Importance of being Earnest is composed of themes and incidents from other of his works and converts them into absurdity (Naassar). “This theme was considered especially heartbreaking by the Victorians, and Wilde himself uses it at times to wring our hearts a bit, but in Earnest, even the abused child is manipulated to create an atmosphere of hilarity as Wilde has a good laugh at his earlier works” (Naassar). This says how even after creating works that deal with the main theme being child abuse Naassar manages to make people laugh and I would say make fun of it in a way. Like stated before his work is reflected on another of his work and he incorporates the theme of child abuse one way or another.

I picked the articles about The World Trade Organization and in the pro article it talks about how this organization is vey beneficial to our economy because it helps export goods to many other countries. Also, WTO has helped small businesses increase alot. Manufacturing and agricultural exports have increased a lot ever since the United States has been with this organization (Margaret). This article basically talks about how the World Trade Organization is a good thing and how it can help boost up the economy. In the contraadicting article it says that the World Trade Organazation is not a good idea especially since our economy has went down the drain. There have been so many jobs taken than created that it is not convenient to have the WTO. There are other countries like China that have entered the WTO that have not brought good results to the United States.

1) How is research different in college than in high school?
Reasearch in high school is EXTREMLEY different. Other than the way higher standards, you are expected to write and research as if you had been doing it your whole life. It's not joke. The sources that we have to use are way different and the amount references that I have had to use is a lot. The leasst amount of references that I have had to use is 65. And that was the bare minimum. One thing that you have to make sure to have is your works cited page. You will get an automatic F for the assignment and may be turned into the university court for plagerism.

2) What skills do you need to have a successful research paper?
Patience is very important. In order to have a good reasearch paper you have to sort through tons and tons of useless information to get to the golden details. You have to be patient.

3) What format do you use to cite your research? Is it strictly enforced?

I have used MLA and APA. It is strictly inforces. If I do not use the correct format I will get an automatic F. They don't mess around. I don't attempt to waste their time.

4) Are there any limits to what sources or amount of sources you can use to research? If so what are they?
I cannot use internet sources. If I have I have limited it to about 2 internet sites. It really just depends on what your professors expects and wants. Wiki is a NO NO in college. Books are precious sources for research.

5) What do you consider the hardest/ easiest thing about researching?

I still think the hardest thing about researching is having patience. Like I said there is so much information out there you just have to decide what you want to use.

From this interview I learned that research papers in college are no joke. Professors take them very serious especially all of the citing and references you have to use to write these papers. Something that really suprised me was when she said that you have to mainly use books for your research other thaan the internet but I know that this may depend on the teacher. I think that it is hard to have to read all kinds of information to only use a few facts for your paper. I hope I will know how to have patience when writing these papers in college.

Showalter, E. (2003). Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism. In EXPLORING Shakespeare. Detroit: Gale. Retrieved from http://ic.galegroup.com:80/ic/suic/ReferenceDetailsPage/ReferenceDetailsWindow?displayGroupName=Reference&prodId=SUIC&action=2&catId=&documentId=GALE%7CEJ2115515812&userGroupName=adamschs&jsid=dfd430190a239ea3807b21f903394511

The article talks about how big the importance of Ophelia is to the play, Hamlet. Her behavior, her appearance, her gestures, her costume, her props, are freighted with emblematic significance…” (Showalter) Ophelia’s meanings in the play are different then Hamlet’s by his dealing more with culture and not feminist like Ophelia’s. The clothing of Ophelia is very important because she wears white to represent her virginity which she is not. She probably wears white to make others like her father think that she still remains a virgin. Also, it is interesting how she has a lot to do with flowers which in her case represent “innocence blossoming” but in reality she is not innocent. Like I said these things could be factors to mislead everyone into thinking that she still has innocence in herself. “The sexually explicit madwoman who, in giving away her wild flowers and herbs, is symbolically deflowering herself.” (Showalter) I take this quote to signify that she is deflowering herself little by little by first losing her virginity, losing Hamlet’s love, losing her father, and going crazy until finally the flower has no more petals so it chooses to die. Ophelia drowning represents feminism by water being a symbol of a woman’s eyes being drowned with tears. For example Laertes stopped being feminine when he stopped tearing up. "Ophelia breaks down because she fails in the female developmental task of shifting her sexual attachment from her father 'to a man who can bring her fulfillment as a woman' " (Showalter). Something parallel about this play is how some critics say that Hamlet had an Oedipus complex with his mother and Ophelia had an electra complex with her father. Probably Ophelia’s complex could have been more innocent than Hamlet’s.

The following topics are the ones I am considering for my research project:
  • Animal experimentation- Is it morally right or wrong to do it?
  • Dress code in schools- Should schools have dress code? Whyor why not?
  • Domestic violence
  • Drug legalization- Should it be legalized? The effects it would have
  • Sexism
  • Gay rights
  • Illegal immigration- How it is affecting countries
  • Racism
  • Weapons of mass destruction- Are they right or wrong? Effects they have in society.
  • Teen pregnancy- Why it is happening? Rates
  • Terrorism
  • Suicide
  • Stem Cell research
  • Rape
  • Abortion
  • Right to Bear Arms
  • Business ethics- I think I am leaning more towars this on\e since I am going to study in the field of business.
  • Death penalty- Should it be done

The career I am interested in pursuing is business and the format you use to write an essay in this area in situational. For example, Harvard uses APA and Chicago uses MLA. I did some research and Owl Purdue suggests to use APA for business.
